Moscato, Sweet Moscato!
Producing quality Moscato is anything but trivial. Moscato is a pillar of Monferrato's history and tradition, and even more so is Moscato di Strevi, where the characteristics of the grape blend with the unique traits of the Valle Bagnario; it is here that Marenco produces Scrapona.
Terpenes, aromatic compounds found freely in the grapes, define the olfactory profile of Moscato Bianco, and we can enjoy them both by tasting a fresh bunch and a glass of Scrapona.
Fermentation is interrupted after a short period, in order to retain the natural sugars of the must, which balance perfectly with the intrinsic freshness of the grape. In the past, "Dutch sacks," thick cotton filters, stopped the fermentation process. Today, we rely on temperature reduction and more efficient filters. Furthermore, during fermentation, the carbon dioxide that develops is retained in the wine. The result is a wine that, in the glass, synthesizes sweetness, olfactory intensity, low alcohol content, and a creamy effervescence.
But what makes Moscato di Strevi even more unique are the calcareous marl soils and the maritime microclimate due to its proximity to the Ligurian Sea, characteristics that give the grapes unique freshness and minerality, leading to incomparable longevity and extraordinary balance: a pleasantly refreshing and versatile wine for food pairings.
Precisely because of the longevity of Moscato di Strevi, the "Scrapona Family Collection" was born: some bottles of Scrapona are stored each year in our cellar to age for a minimum of four years in the bottle. The result is a Moscato with perfectly preserved effervescence, but with more complex and enveloping aromas and flavors.
Quality requires time, passion, constancy, and patience, from the vineyard to the bottle. And Marenco knows this, having done it for 100 years.
